The four Humanities departmental boards agreed last week on a revised version of the plans for reducing costs within the faculty. The new proposals seem to gather more support. The programmes that will have to disappear may be given a place within other programmes or new programmes.

Excited to have this excellent book in print and in hand!

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Sister Margaret MacDonell this week. A native Gaelic speaker from Cape Breton, Sister Margaret was one of the first graduates of the Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures at Harvard, earning her PhD here in 1969. She also held AM degrees from Harvard (1968) and Columbia (1961). She went on to chair the Department of Celtic Studies at St. Francis Xavier University and maintained a continued connection with Harvard during that time. We pay tribute to her important contribution to the study of Celtic languages and literatures with her influential book The Emigrant Experience: Songs of Highland Emigrants in North America, as well as her ongoing work on behalf of the Scottish Gaels in Nova Scotia and beyond. A friend to many of the most influential Gaelic scholars of the present and past centuries, she was also a generous supporter of Gaelic learners and early career scholars, and she will be dearly missed. Fois shìorraidh dha h-anam.
