If you want to become a better thinker, MIT xPRO has courses for that!

Critical Thinking and Decision Making and Systems Thinking are two of our most popular offerings, but potential learners often wonder which one is best for their professional development.

What’s the difference between the two methodologies?

When should you use one approach over the other?

What can you expect from each course?

In our latest blog, we define each methodology, explain what the courses cover, and examine how to understand the two approaches in relation to one another.

If you want to become a better thinker, MIT xPRO has courses for that! Critical Thinking and Decision Making and Systems Thinking are two of our most popular offerings, but potential learners often wonder which one is best for their professional development.

As AI takes on more responsibilities and fosters connections that were once unimaginable, we need to think more holistically about the world around us.

In short, we need to become better systems thinkers.

Check out our latest blog to learn about several ways that AI and systems thinking intersect and why developing a systems thinking mindset is imperative for operating in an AI-forward world.

As AI takes on more responsibilities and fosters connections that were once unimaginable, we need to think more holistically about the world around us. In short, we need to become better systems thinkers.

We're excited to hear from MIT xPRO's Assistant Director of Instructional Design, Luke Hobson, who recently spoke with Inside Higher Ed; sharing advice for aspiring learning designers, his path towards an Ed.D., and where AI fits into the future of the field:

For professionals considering an online course in artificial intelligence, the rapid pace of change can be a deterrent. In a field where new tools emerge weekly, it’s reasonable to wonder: Will what I learn today still be useful tomorrow?

It’s an important question—one our team takes seriously. The short answer is this:

The courses in MIT xPRO’s AI portfolio are about more than learning the latest AI tools. They help you develop the strategic skills necessary to incorporate AI into your work, even as it continues to evolve.

Seventy-five percent of alumni saw a career impact within 12 months.

That’s the kind of return on investment most professionals hope for when they enroll in an online program.

In a 2025 survey of alumni from the online certificate program Architecture and Systems Engineering: Models and Methods to Manage Complex Systems, learners reported tangible, often immediate gains: new responsibilities, salary increases, job offers, and promotions.

The new accessibility of AI tools has sparked a wave of experimentation in businesses across industries. But trying out a new technology is one thing. Figuring out how to use it to drive business results is something else entirely.

Uncertainty surrounding AI model selection, infrastructure requirements, data readiness, risk mitigation, and return on investment can stall progress before it even really begins. Leaders are left asking: What is the right approach for our organization? How can we ensure AI delivers lasting value?

Deploying AI for Strategic Impact, a new nine-week course developed by MIT xPRO and the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), was built for professionals navigating these challenges.

The course draws on the expertise of 15 MIT faculty members, including Neil Thompson, Dr. Una-May O’Reilly, Manolis Kellis, and Andrew McAfee. It was developed in collaboration with AI expert and learning facilitator Jessica Cervi, whose experience in instructional design and course development informed the course structure and focus.

We spoke with Dr. O'Reilly and Jessica Cervi to learn about how this course provides participants with the frameworks, language, and confidence to make informed decisions about AI deployment within their organization.

When it comes to AI, the issue for most organizations isn't a lack of awareness, but rather a lack of strategic alignment. Deploying AI for Strategic Impact was built for professionals navigating these challenges.

As our world becomes increasingly digitally connected, cybersecurity is no longer solely a consideration for IT departments: it’s a strategic priority that every business must take seriously. Organizations that lack the expertise to assess risk, detect potential breaches, and design safer systems are vulnerable to attacks that can cost millions of dollars and damage their hard-earned reputations.

We spoke with MIT Professor Srini Devadas and cybersecurity expert Chelsea Conard about how technical professionals responsible for developing technology, spearheading projects, or making strategic decisions can lead the charge in cybersecurity. Their insights helped shape Cybersecurity for Technical Leaders, a new eight-week online course developed by MIT xPRO and the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).

Did you know that a modern luxury car can require upwards of 150 computers to operate all of its features?

The systems we rely on are becoming increasingly complex, as more functionality from AI and automation is added. Engineers need tools that not only manage complexity but also help ensure safety—particularly in high-risk industries like automotive, aerospace, and tech.

MIT xPRO has explored how model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is being used to produce functional safety deliverables. Specifically, the Model-Based Systems Engineering: Documentation and Analysis course looks at how MBSE is used to undertake safety analyses and whether it can create safety-related deliverables in the automotive industry.

We spoke with lead instructor Dr. Bruce Cameron and industry expert Amardeep Sidhu from Magna International about how MBSE is helping engineers build safer, more reliable systems in an increasingly complex world.

Since ChatGPT disrupted the scene in 2022, the demand for generative AI knowledge has skyrocketed. Businesses are racing to figure out how to use it, and professionals across industries are eager to keep up. In response, we launched a course called Driving Innovation with Generative AI to help learners explore generative AI’s capabilities, applications, and ethical considerations.

Wondering what to expect from the course? We spoke with Grant Harvey, a writer for The Neuron, and a graduate of the first cohort of our generative AI course.

In this Q&A, Grant shares his experience with the course: what surprised him, how it changed his perspective on AI, and why professionals from a range of industries can benefit from it.

Ready or not, AI is here to stay, and it’s reshaping the workforce. We spoke with Grant Harvey, a writer for The Neuron.
