In collaboration with the South Asian Women’s Collective, the Association of Black Harvard Women will be hosting Phonebank for Justice. ABHW and SAWC will be calling the Louisville and Tallahassee police departments and political leaders to demand justice for Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade. Too often, the lives of and stories of Black womxn and Trans populations are overlooked in the fight against police brutality and systemic racism. It is time that we take a stand.

The phonebanking event will happen tomorrow, June 5, 2020 at 5:00 EDT. Here is the Zoom ID: 96785587264. We recognize the emotional burden that coincides with racial and gender-based injustice and urge you to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing. While we strongly encourage members of the community to participate, we only want you to do so if you are able.

The Association of Black Harvard Women and the South Asian Women’s Collective look forward to joining forces to take action and advocate for Breonna and Tony. They deserve justice and for their stories to be amplified along with the many other cases of police brutality and systemic racism. Thank you for your ongoing support and remember to take care of yourself during this difficult time.

The Association of Black Harvard Women would like to offer our support to not only Black womxn and femmes within the Harvard Community but also to the broader global Black community during this time. We stand with those of you who are participating in protests, making your voices heard via social media, donating to important causes, signing petitions, spreading awareness, and more. In addition to the recent statements and events that ABHW has cosponsored and will cosponsor in the future, we would like to challenge our membership and alumnae to match our organization's donation of $400. Please send all of your donations to through Venmo. These funds will be split evenly between the Louisville Community Bail Fund and The Okra Project. The Louisville Community Bail Fund is located in the hometown of Breonna Taylor, and The Okra Project is an organization dedicated to serving Black Trans men, women, and more, like Tony McDade and Nina Pop. Detailed information about each fund is stated below. ABHW would like to shed light on these individuals, due to the lack of coverage and attention their deaths have received, and we hope that the lives of Black womxn and the LGBTQ+ community are prioritized and considered as well when we all make the faithful cry, “Black Lives Matter.”

Louisville Community Bail Fund: “The Louisville Community Bail Fund exists to not only bail out folks, but provide post-release support to get them from jail, fed, and to a situation of safety. LCBF also maintains a focus on preventative measures for those targeted by law enforcement and threatened with incarceration. While we work with national networks, we are also one of the only bail funds that rely entirely on support from individuals in our social justice community.”

The Okra Project: “The Okra Project is a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People wherever we can reach them.”

“To honor Nina Pop, Tony McDade, and the many Black Trans people who have been murdered by state-sanctioned violence, The Okra Project is dedicating $15,000 to create the Nina Pop Mental Health Recovery Fund and the Tony McDade Mental Health Recovery Fund.”

ABHW nominates Harvard Black Students Association to donate to any cause of their choice.
