UAC members host visiting students in their dormitory rooms, return to their high schools to relate their experiences at the College to others, and call, congratulate and serve as mentors for admitted students a few days after they receive the good news from Harvard. They also play a major role in greeting, hosting, and entertaining more than a thousand admitted students who are invited to campus for three days for the April Visiting Program. Through opportunities like this, admitted students can begin to build their personal Harvard "community" long before they set foot in a classroom. The Visiting Program, for many current undergraduates, marked their "aha" moment of decision making; those three days were what made Harvard real, inviting, and most importantly, a place that could become a future home. We'd love for current students to join the UAC family and help us realize these goals.

Hometown Ambassadors are volunteers who make presentations at their high schools over Winter Break with the goal of making Harvard more accessible to students in their hometowns. In their presentations, Hometown Ambassadors provide high schoolers with a sense of what it's like to be an undergraduate at Harvard, and topics discussed can include Harvard’s diverse academic opportunities, the unique aspects of student life at Harvard, required application materials, and Harvard’s generous financial aid program. Hometown Ambassadors are provided with materials, support, and training to help them put together effective presentations.

All students accepted into the Hometown Ambassador program are required to attend a training session with Harvard Admissions Officers and members of the Undergraduate Admissions Council on Monday, December 8 from 4:00-5:00pm.

Please reply to this post, message the UAC, or email Veronica Behrens ([email protected]) with questions or concerns.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Hometown Ambassador. As an Ambassador you will be asked to return to your high school during the winter break to talk to prospective students about your Harvard experience. Harvard's Freshman International Program (FIP) is a pre-orientation program for incoming international students who have either not attended school in the United States or have done so for a short period of time, and for U.S. citizens who have spent most of their lives abroad. FIP will introduce international students to American culture and some aspects of higher education in the United States, particularly at Harvard. Harvard administrators, faculty, and upper class international students will serve as resources for these orientation sessions.

The Harvard College First Generation Student Union (FGSU) is a student organization on campus that seeks to foster community among Harvard first gens in order to empower them during their transition to college. It is widely thought that one in six students at Harvard College is a first-generation college student. FGSU serves to bring this subset of students together while connecting them to valuable resources that already exist on campus.

Visit FGSU's website (http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/firstgen/), like them on Facebook (facebook.com/harvardfirstgen) and/or shoot them an email [email protected] to learn more!
