For more than 50 years, the Institute for Educational Management has done one thing exceptionally well: helping experienced higher education leaders step back, think bigger, and lead with greater vision and impact.

Michael Harpe, Vice President for Student Engagement at Rust College, knows that firsthand. As one of three HBCU leaders selected nationwide for IEM's 2025 cohort, and the only representative from Mississippi, Harpe brought a perspective that matters deeply in higher education right now.

In his own words: "We can't be so myopic in our thinking regarding the kinds of people we interact with in higher education."

Eight intensive days. Leaders from across the country and around the world. Real strategic challenges. And the kind of peer community that doesn't end when the program does.

What happens when the person marketing a program finally gets to experience it herself?

For Jennifer Cannon, marketing lead for our higher education portfolio, Women in Higher Education Leadership was a chance to step out from behind the scenes and into the room as a real participant.

The shift happened fast, during the first day's networking lunch.

"From that point on, I wasn't an employee", says Cannon, "I was a leader working in higher ed, experiencing the same things as other women at the table. It was nice to feel seen."

She came in knowing the content cold. What she didn't expect was the feeling. The honesty in the room. The realization that every woman at those tables was juggling a career, a family, a home, and figuring it all out. She left with new negotiation tactics, crisis management tools, and 63 women in a group chat she's not letting go of.

"It's hard to capture that feeling in a marketing campaign. But I'm inspired to come up with ways to convey it."

One of the highlights of our week in Nashville was co-hosting a reception with Jennifer Cheatham for Harvard Graduate School of Education alumni and friends. The room was full of familiar faces.

Cheatham used the moment to preview HGSE's exciting new Initiative on Superintendent as Civic Leader, a bold effort to transform how superintendents and their teams are supported so they can steward the future of public education with civic imagination, democratic purpose, and political skill.

Thank you to Kristine Gilmore from AASA, The School Superintendents Association, and Superintendent Barbara A. Mullen for their inspiring remarks.

When Deniann Grant helped design the new Revolutionizing Leadership program alongside Faculty Chair Shawn Ginwright, she was building a curriculum and also a container for transformation.

"Dr. Ginwright is a phenomenal storyteller. When he is in the room, you can be certain he is bringing his entire being and community with him."

As a teaching team member and Ed.L.D. candidate at HGSE, Grant watched something remarkable unfold: practitioners bringing their lived experiences into the room and becoming the curriculum itself. That, she says, is what makes this program different. "The learning doesn't just happen on the page — it happens in the room, through the people in it."

Healing-centered leadership isn't just a professional practice. It's a way of showing up fully for yourself and the people you serve. And so many leaders need exactly that right now.

Political leadership is one of the most challenging aspects of the superintendency. At the AASA, The School Superintendents Association conference earlier this year, a packed room proved just how much it matters.

We were proud to support Jennifer Cheatham's session, Building Capacity for Political Leadership, alongside Susan Enfield, Jenny McGown, Warren Morgan, Barbara Mullen, and Rachel White.

Attendees got a first look at new tools built specifically for superintendents: teaching cases, simulations, and a field book grounded in real political challenges.

The timing couldn't be more urgent. If you're a superintendent or support one, Cheatham's Initiative on Superintendent as Civic Leader and programs at HGSE are designed for exactly this moment.

A November iteration of Superintendent as Civic Leader just launched. Apply now: https://bit.ly/3PC6Zlz
