Kennedy, the mission of the Institute of Politics is to unite and engage students, particularly undergraduates, with academics, politicians, activists, and policymakers on a non-partisan basis and to stimulate and nurture their interest in public service and leadership. The Institute strives to promote greater understanding and cooperation between the academic world and the world of politics and p

ublic affairs. Led by a director, Senior Advisory Board, Student Advisory Committee, and staff, the Institute provides wide-ranging opportunities for both Harvard students and the general public.

In February 2021, NASA Astronaut Victor Glover shared a greeting from the International Space Station to the IOP ahead of a JFK Jr. Forum celebrating Black achievement in space. Glover emphasized the importance of representation in science and encouraging pathways in public service — a message that resonates to this day.

📊 The 51st Edition of the Harvard Youth Poll shows a generation under serious strain. Young Americans report deep economic insecurity, declining trust in democratic institutions, and rising social fragmentation.

Surveying 18-to-29-year-olds nationwide, the poll finds that instability — financial, political, and social — now defines daily life and shapes how young people view the country and their futures.

▪️ Only 13% say the country is on the right track.
▪️ AI is fueling uncertainty about the future of work.
▪️ Trust in institutions is falling and social trust is unraveling.
▪️ Vaccine confidence is split.
▪️ President Trump and both major political parties receive poor ratings.
▪️ And while most young people reject political violence, a meaningful minority see conditions where it might be acceptable.
