Happy Motherโ€™s Day! ๐ŸŒธ

Across the animal kingdom, mothers play vital roles in giving their young the best chance at survival. Some species, like many mammals and birds, devote enormous time and energy to nurturing and protecting a small number of offspring. These are known as altricial species. Others, including many fish, sharks, and reptiles, produce large numbers of young and provide little to no parental care. These are called precocial species. Even so, these mothers are remarkably strategic, carefully choosing safe places to lay their eggs and giving the next generation a strong start in life. ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿข๐Ÿฆˆ๐Ÿ˜

Today is ! ๐Ÿฆ‡

Meet the Northern Long-eared Bat. While they might be famous for those adorable oversized ears, these tiny flyers are in serious trouble. Their populations across eastern North America are plummeting due to habitat loss and disease.

Why should we care?

They are nature's pest control! A nursing mother can eat up to 110% of her own body weight in insects every single night! By doing so, they play a vital role in balancing our food web and ensuring biodiversity. A world with fewer bats is a world with more crop-destroying pests.

Drop a ๐Ÿฆ‡ in the comments to show some bat love! Also check out our symbol library for more bat symbols: https://ian.umces.edu/media-library/symbols/
