At its core, Religion and Public Life is about enhancing the public understanding of religion in the service of building a just world at peace. RPL provides an umbrella for programs, research, and scholarship that explore the ways that religion is entwined with social, political, and economic dimensions of human experience and the institutions that structure human interaction. We provide a framewo

rk for students across disciplines and professionals in a wide array of fields and to better understand the destructive as well as the creative power of religion in unique contexts. RPL’s academic offerings provide students with the theoretical frameworks and critical approaches needed to understand and address the religious dimensions of the most intractable issues of our time. In addition, RPL supports a broad range of programming within and beyond HDS, inspiring fresh approaches to conflict transformation, education, and a range of other fields. Beyond these pillars, RPL is a space to convene discussions and support projects on religion, power, justice, sustainability, health, and many more critical aspects of public life, both literally in the newly renovated Swartz Hall on Harvard’s campus and figuratively by providing a framework and support for faculty, staff, and students to collaborate on these compelling issues.

Meet Jenn Louie, MRPL '23 Candidate

If you’re wondering how religion and science connect, just ask Jenn Louie!

Jenn has lived in Hawaii, California, and NYC before settling in Somerville to pursue a Master of Religion and Public Life (MRPL) at HDS. Through this program, she aims to discover how our ethics and morals are formed in order to innovate methods that can heal injustices in the technology industry.

“I don't identify as religious and wasn't raised with a religious affiliation or education. However, I believe there is wisdom in the study of religion in order to cultivate stronger moral leadership that will help my industry contend with the immense human suffering those in my field witness in our work.”

Jenn has lived in Hawaii, California and NYC before settling in Somerville to pursue a Master of Religion and Public Life (MRPL) at HDS.

She has led teams at Facebook, Google and Meetup, where she was investigating the “underbelly of the internet” and worked to protect platform users from fraud, terrorism, misinformation and other violent acts. She has also spoken at SXSW, IDEO, and Techweek NYC about online risk and tech policies.

Jenn began her journey at HDS last year as a Special Student and knew almost immediately that she would need more time to satisfy her intellectual curiosity.

“As a Special Student, I was grateful to have learned from Professors Diana Eck, Matthew Potts, and my advisor, Professor David Lamberth. They were incredibly generous with their time, and we would have several hour-long conversations about ethics, pluralism and faith."

She was so moved by the individuals she met in her program that she built a web app called the Spiritual Care Project that aims to improve access to interfaith spiritual care.

When asked, Jenn likes to say that ‘Acts of Service’ is one of her core love languages. Prior to attending HDS, she worked at the California Medical Assistance Team maintaining a field hospital at one of California's COVID epicenters.

In her spare time, Jenn loves to experience the outdoors.

“I love searching for the roads less traveled, convening with nature and discovering mermaid ponds (giant tidepools one can swim in). Growing up in northern California and living in Hawaii, I find the ocean restorative and coastal winds fortifying.”

“How can we make it so that when people hear ‘Palestine’ they know, yes, tragic things are happening but there’s also so much joy in this community?” asks Ciara Moezidis, master of theological studies (MTS) ‘24 and Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy student. “Hospitality, generosity, care for one another and for those who visit [Palestine]… it’s hard to even grasp. We’re trying to capture that disorientation of joy and tragedy of what it’s like to visit and what it’s like to be Palestinian.”

Two Harvard Divinity School Religion, Conflict, and Peace Initiative students launched a TikTok to capture their experience of Learning in Context in Israel/Palestine.

"What can we learn about our society when we listen to people on the margins?"

Meet Harvard Divinity School Journalism Fellow Deborah Jian Lee as she explores her burning question about religion and just peace, "This question has helped me grasp both how systems impact the vulnerable and how the marginalized take action, make mistakes, evolve, and tell their own stories. It's guided my reporting from covering former skinheads deprogramming from violent extremism to Chinese migrant workers forced to live apart from their children as they make American consumer products."

We're hiring Harvard Divinity School Graduate Assistants for the 2022-23 academic year!

Open to any enrolled Harvard University graduate student.

RPL Graduate Assistants (GA) work closely with a staff person on the RPL team to carry out a range of duties in support of the RPL mission. GAs contribute to the collective vision and work of the RPL as we build and promote it. The RPL is committed to ensuring the GA’s responsibilities include those substantive, not just administrative (though some administrative support will be required). RPL seeks as much as possible to ensure the work done aligns directly with the student’s own interests and formation.

This summer Harvard Divinity School student Haley M Barker, MTS '23, is interning with Religion News Service for her Certificate in RPL. Haley studies Buddhism and often writes about current events affecting Buddhist communities.

Check out her story, featured in the
Washington Post:

The protests that drove Sri Lanka’s president from office brought together people from across the country’s diverse and sometimes warring ethno-religious groups: Tamils, Muslims, Christians, Sinhala Buddhists and the saffron-robed Buddhist monks who are fixtures of the political scene
