Rutgers University-Physics

Rutgers University-Physics Physics is the most fundamental of the sciences. Discoveries in physics have had a major impact on all science and engineering fields.

Permanently closed.

Quantum mechanics, for example, has transformed chemistry and is now extending our understanding of biology. Developments in condensed matter physics, such as the transistor and the invention of the laser, have become the foundation of electronics and communications. Finally, more recently, physics has contributed to the field of biology by providing a vital framework for predictive modeling and n

ew instrumentation. A physics curriculum provides the knowledge of fundamental science needed for a deep understanding of these ideas. A degree in physics opens a rich diversity of options to the graduating student. Approximately one-half of physics graduates go on to graduate school. Those not attending a graduate program enter employment in physics or such related fields as electronics, computers, engineering, and teaching.

Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider just recently started testing the accelerator for running at the higher energy of 13 TeV, and already they have found new insights into the fundamental structure of the universe. Though four fundamental forces – the strong force, the weak force, the electrom…

On this day in 1975 cosmonauts Georgi Grechko (right) and Aleksei Gubarev (left) returned safely to Earth having spent a record 29 days in space aboard the Soviet Union's Salyut 4 station. Their Soyuz capsule landed 110 km NE of Tselinograd during a snow storm. Flight engineer Gubarev has a PhD in mathematics. In 1992 he resigned from the Russian space program to teach atmospheric physics.
