The Department of Childhood Studies puts the issues, concepts and debates that surround the study of children and childhoods at the center of its research and teaching missions. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the Department of Childhood Studies aims both to theorize and historicize the figure of the Child and to situate the study of children and childhoods within contemporary cultural and g

lobal contexts. The curriculum in the Department is multidisciplinary in scope and purpose and provides students with a strong background in both humanistic and social science perspectives on children and their representations. This approach will prepare students for careers in many areas including academics, public policy, social services, youth programming, and education. This page is curated by graduate students in the Department of Childhood Studies. The views they express here are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Department.

CFP: American Antiquarian Society is looking for panelists for their "Historic Children's Voices" at American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

"From diaries to artwork to printed books and pamphlets produced by young people, works by children are present in existing archives but are often understudied. This panel seeks to engage panelists in discussing work produced by, but not necessarily for, children in the eighteenth century to shed light on the larger historical or literary significances of those works."

We're so thrilled to welcome Dr. Crystal Webster for a talk on her new book 'Beyond the Boundaries of Childhood: African American Children
in the Antebellum North'. Join us Monday, November 15th, 4:20-5:20 PM EST on zoom https://bit.ly/3jWn4Qc

About the book:
Beyond the Boundaries is a history of Black
childhood in the U.S. during historical periods and in geographic regions experiencing the profoundly
fraught shift from slavery to freedom. In this talk,
Crystal Webster will focus on the uses of Black
children's labor. As part of gradual emancipation,
whites indentured Black children, extending the
exploitation of Black, unfree labor specifically
through children. Webster's child-centered
framework exposes both the centrality of Black
children as historical subjects in the process of
emancipation in the North, as well as their unique
forms of resistance to the exploitation of their labor.
