⭐Student Spotlight- HCIR Edition
Lauren Liening is a sophomore majoring in Psychology and minoring in Neuroscience.

“For my poster, I examined which brain regions are uniquely associated with depression symptoms in children with and without ADHD. Though this topic was challenging to cover, it was also incredibly interesting, as I was able to learn how to analyze and interpret data relating to ADHD and brain structure. I'm really excited to learn more about this topic and hope to present more posters at future conferences.

As an undergraduate who struggles with public speaking, HCIR was a great way to gain experience presenting a research poster without the pressures of attending a larger conference. Everyone at the event was incredibly supportive and willing to engage with many of the projects on display. I was able to talk with students and faculty from other colleges in Illinois, though my favorite part was getting to meet other students who were also interested in ADHD, psychology, or neuroscience.

Attending the symposium with other SIU students was a lot of fun. Elizabeth, Marlee, and Kyla all had really interesting and unique projects that I really enjoyed learning about. Betsy and Dr. Ruffner were amazing and wholeheartedly supported all four of us. Any undergraduate students interested in presenting or discussing a research project should absolutely apply to HCIR. 10 out of 10, would recommend.”

“At HCIR I did a presentation panel based on a research paper I wrote about disabled ballet dancers. This was a good opportunity for me to speak in front of my peers about something I care deeply about. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at everyone else’s presentations as I learned from them and found things I care about supported by these other students' research. This has been my first experience with college honors, and I would absolutely do it again!”

⭐Student Spotlight- HCIR Edition
Marlee Keck is a first-year majoring in Art with a specialization in Communication Design and minoring in American Sign Language.

“I recently took a trip up to Chicago for HCIR, and my topic was about the physical and emotional environment of a classroom. What does that mean? Well, it goes into depth about what our needs are when in a learning environment, what is the teacher like? What is the community like? What color are the walls? What type of desks are we sitting in? There are a huge number of variables when it comes to having a welcoming environment to learn. My poster specifically goes into the acoustics, rules, and musculoskeletal system, and all the different kinds of experiments and experiences students have while in school. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Chicago; everyone was very inviting and interested to hear others out on their research. I would definitely go back for the next year, and I recommend this experience to others who are interested and have their own research proposals!”
