Each spring, Geography and Environmental Resources selects students to receive a variety of program scholarships and holds a reception to present the awards and honor the recipients. Congratulations to Spring 2020 Geography and Environmental Resources Master of Science graduate Dylan Gibson! As a graduate student, Dylan served on the SIU Sustainability Council for two years and was a leader in the student sustainability organization SIU SENSE. He also played a key role in getting SIU Carbondale to sign on to the Second Nature Climate Commitment. In 2019, Dylan received the Dr. Benedykt Dziegielewski Outstanding Geography Graduate Student Scholarship and he was a recipient of the SIU Environmental Ambassador Award in May 2020. Dylan plans to work in the nonprofit sector with organizations focused on environmental or social justice advocacy. You have certainly made the most of your years as a graduate student, Dylan, and we wish you continued success in all your endeavors!

Congratulations to Spring 2020 Geography and Environmental Resources Master of Science graduate Pearl Deku! In 2019, Pearl received the Graduate and Professional Student Council Award and an award from the Priscilla Anne Moulton Memorial Fund to support her project, “Assessment of Implementation Plans for Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Ghana”. She traveled to Accra, Ghana, to conduct her research. Pearl also earned the Environmental Ambassador Award presented by the SIU Office of Sustainability. This fall, she will enter the SIU Environmental Resource and Policy Program to attain her PhD, majoring in Environmental Policy and Administration. Kudos, Pearl! We look forward to being part of your future achievements!
