SIU Center for Sustainable Farming

SIU Center for Sustainable Farming We are a 2.5 acre farm center that engages students with diverse agricultural interests and experience levels to discover new passions and to refine skills.

The Student Sustainable Farm is located two miles southwest of the main campus, at the Vermicomposting Center at 3373 Pleasant Hill Rd. The student farm is presently six acres with 2.5 acres in vegetable production. The farm offers students the opportunity to run a small farm to develop the planning, production, food handling and marketing skills needed to find employment in the exploding sustainable/organic food industry.

As the 2025 Fall semester comes to an end, we are thinking about next year and want to know what you would like to see at the farm or in the Farmers Market.

Below is a short guided survey with some project ideas staff and students have brought up. There is also an option to fill in your own.
If you have a specific crop you're interested in learning how to grow, please type and submit it in the "Other" selection.

This survey is to see what topics students of SIU and community members are interested in learning about regarding farming. From this survey, we will try to implement a project at the farm and host workshop events catered to community interest.
