UWG Tanner Health School of Nursing Study Abroad from Jessica Kline.
“On the fourth day of our study abroad program in Foligno, Italy, the UWG nursing cohort listened to local university students present on earning a nursing degree in Italy. After their presentation, we toured the hospital in Foligno. During the tour, we learned the nurse-to-patient ratio was high, prompting me to ask why nurses kept returning to inpatient work. The nurses explained that their passion and desire to give back to their community motivated them. This conversation highlighted that even abroad, nurses struggle with high nurse-to-patient ratios and burnout. As a nursing community, we continue to provide care, compassion, and empathy for our patients. We show up tired, missing our families, because we care deeply, and want better for our communities and patients. Ultimately, this study abroad program offered a chance to learn about a different culture and healthcare system. Meeting Italy’s nurses deepened my commitment to compassionate care, and I will return home inspired to advocate for positive change in my own nursing practice. I will be forever grateful for the people I met and the new experiences I encountered.

UWG Tanner Health School of Nursing Study Abroad from Erin Harrison-Sobakin.
“First day visiting the Hospital San Giovanni Battista in Foligno, Italy. During our initial tour, we learned that in the Umbria region, the region we're in, hospital employees wore specific uniform colors based on their roles. Nurses wear green, CNAs wear orange, transporters wear yellow, and doctors wear light blue, for example. I thought this was a good moment to capture because it was the first thing we learned on the hospital floor, setting the foundation for the rest of our education.

UWG Tanner Health School of Nursing Study Abroad from Kaya Smith-Allen, BSN, RNC-NIC:
“UWG students were provided with a private tour of Piazza della Repubblica in Foligno, Italy, led by tour guide Ebe. With its medieval stone architecture and timeless elegance, the square reflected centuries of Italian history, art, and civic life within the Italian community. The experience offered students a deeper appreciation for the cultural and historical significance of this landmark in the Umbria region. &Visas ”
