Join us this Wednesday, April 29, in Ingram Library for "Muscogee Ancestral Lands in West Georgia" — a meaningful exploration of the Muscogee (Creek) people's enduring connection to this land.

See details about the event ⬇️

As the region marks 200 years since the forced removal of the Muscogee people, an upcoming event hosted by the University of West Georgia will center Indigenous voices and lived experiences, highlighting a history that is not only remembered, but is still unfolding.

Please join us Thursday, April 16, for the Sociology & Social Policy Distinguished Lecture.

We welcome Dr. Calvin John Smiley (CUNY Hunter College), who will present "Purgatory Citizenship: A Case for Abolition Reentry."

📍 Nursing Building 106
🕔 Reception: 5:00 p.m.
🕕 Lecture: 6:00 p.m.

About the Talk:

Reentry after incarceration is often framed as redemption, but reality is far harsher. Returning individuals face lost rights, stigma, and a confusing, unstable transition.

Calvin John Smiley shows reentry involves navigating fragmented systems that extend the carceral state. While support is necessary, this talk draws on abolitionist visions to eliminate the need for such systems by dismantling carceral logics and building alternatives that address the root causes of mass incarceration.
