June 20th we had the swine and poultry kids out at the farm for our annual field day. The 4hers got to work on their showmanship and general knowledge of their projects to prepare for show day!

Thursday, June 20th we will hold a mandatory Breakfast Club swine and poultry field day from 9 am-1 pm. Educational workshop by ISU Swine Specialist, Chris Beedle, and Niman Ranch Representatives. Lunch will be provided. At 1:30 pm following the field day, there will be an opportunity to do your YQCA training in-person. This training can also be completed online at https://yqcaprogram.org/

Amazing project with amazing impact! Monona County Extension Monona County 4-H, Iowa Monona County Fair Iowa State University Extension and Outreach

Melissa Beermann created The Breakfast Club, a program allowing youth to learn how to raise hogs at Iowa State University’s Western Research and Demonstration Farm. The Breakfast Club is free of charge, making it accessible to underserved youth who don’t necessarily come from a farming family. And it helps first-generation farmers pursue a career in agriculture.

“Everybody looks at 12th grade and under, like, ‘they’re just on computers all the time, that’s all they care about.’ It’s not all they care about,” says Beermann. “They want to come out to the farm. They want to work hard, they want to sweat, and they want to know where the food comes from.”
