The VTSU Castleton Bank Gallery presents Wet Wings, an exhibition of paintings by Goshen, Vermont, artist Charlotte Reider-Smith.
At the heart of the exhibition are three large-scale paintings exploring three levels of consciousness: the shadow self, the conscious ego, and the higher, universal self- a triptych of inner life rendered in oil on unstretched canvas.
The show also includes other large works that explore familial portraiture, motherhood, emotional landscapes, and the body. Reider-Smith’s paintings are not ‘precious’ objects — they are walked on, sewn into, sanded, soaked, and cracked open, revealing the layers beneath, a constant process of emergence.
These works have sustained Reider-Smith’s creative practice, and through this exhibit, she both honors them and prepares to move forward. In shedding these layers, she invites viewers to bear witness to her metamorphosis.
