On this Thankful Thursday, SWCC recognizes the Perkins Career and Technical Education Program which provides Federal funding to the Commonwealth of Virginia to help support career and technical education at the high school and postsecondary levels. The Perkins Career and Technical Education Program is named after Carl D. Perkins, who was a Congressman from Kentucky.

In Virginia, the Perkins career and technical education (CTE) postsecondary program funds are distributed to community colleges by the Virginia Department of Education in collaboration with the Virginia Community College System.

SWCC receives Perkins funding annually in the range of $125,000 to $161,000. SWCC has typically used the Perkins funds to help support functions and activities such as equipment and supplies for CTE courses, career coaching and career services for CTE students, robotics team support, and marketing of CTE programs.
