UNI Department of Biology Welcome to the University of Northern Iowa Department of Biology page!

The University of Northern Iowa Department of Biology provides students with a broad foundation in the field of biology, as well as allowing you to tailor your program of study to a particular career or to meet your personal interests. We offer several majors, over 50 different classes, 15 clubs, and undergraduate research opportunities within the department.

The semester is winding down, but our busy work continues. Students and faculty in the biology department are just about to launch into the summer research mode. Yesterday, a group of students visited the entomology collection at Iowa State University and helped with databasing specimens in the collection, some of which were collected in 1925! Databasing historical insect collections is critical for us to understand the distribution of insect pollinators in Iowa and their range shift over the years, and so we can better protect these animals' future, which is critical to the fruit and vegetable production in the state. This is part of the ongoing "Bees of Iowa" project that is led by our graduate student Trevor Greene.

Senior Spotlight!! 🎉🎓

Meet Kayla Welter, graduating May 2026 with her B.A. in Biology! After graduation, Kayla plans to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport starting in July. 🩺

While at UNI, Kayla said that she loved how tight-knit the community is. In a way, this helped make even the challenging classes more manageable. She’s also met some of her best friends here, including Wally! 🐊

Isabella is a Biology major with a Chemistry minor graduating in May 2026. During her time at UNI, she’s valued the meaningful connections she’s built with faculty and her experience as a teaching assistant, helping fellow students learn and grow.
