Campbell Hall was built to help house the growing number of women students after World War II and officially opened in 1952, named for Dean of Women Sadie B. Campbell. An addition was added in 1962, shown in one of these photos under construction. In January 2025, the Board of Regents approved the building’s demolition. James Cleland Gilchrist was UNI’s first chief administrator, his title was principal rather than president. He studied at Antioch College under Horace Mann and received an honorary M.A. degree from Allegheny College. He was hired as principal of UNI (then known as the Iowa State Normal School) in 1877 when the school had only one main building. Two building have been named for him, the first Gilchrist Hall burned down in 1972 and the second Gilchrist Hall was dedicated to him in 1975.
