Built in 1933, the Commons was designed as a supervised space where students could socialize, attend dances, and dine on campus. After Bartlett opened in 1915, with additions in 1916 and 1923, continued rise in attendance at UNI called for another dormitory. An addition was constructed in 1947, though post-war supply shortages slowed completion until the next year. After Bartlett filled in 1937, UNI built Lawther Hall in 1940, honoring Anna B. Lawther.
