The UNI Clarinet Studio, lead by Dr. Amanda McCandless, features students majoring in clarinet performance, music education, performing arts management, public relations, psychology, and jazz studies. UNI Clarinet Studio students participate in a wide range of ensembles at UNI, including the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Northern Iowa Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Panther Marching Band Clarin

et Choir, and a variety of chamber ensembles. Students also have the chance to participate in and perform for a variety of clarinet guest artists and events, such as Iowa Clarinet Day and the UNI Clarinet Symposium.

So it is April and busy here, so I haven’t had the chance to congratulate our four seniors on their outstanding senior recitals. Maddy Christof and McKinley Boyd were two weeks ago and last week we had Angelina DeSocio and Abby Voshell. I’m excited to see what they accomplish next!!

UNI Middle School Clarinet Day was a blast!! 2 dozen 5-8 graders, seven UNI music students getting some real world experience, and one clarinet professor trying to encourage the next generation play the clarinet because it is fun and real life not on a screen. They were a joy and I hope they all come back next year and keep practicing!!!

In case you’ve been wondering what’s going on in the clarinet studio here at UNI, we just did a side-by-side performance of Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony, and tonight Elizabeth Stanish won second prize in the UNI Emerging Artist Competition playing Donald Martino’s Set for Clarinet. And we have two big double senior recitals coming up. And Middle School Clarinet Day is April 17! We’re ending the year on a lot of high notes!!
