UNI Culture and Intensive English Program

Over the past weekend, Carolina Coronado-Park, Director of International Engagement, and Maoko Umeda, OIE Japanese Outreach Initiatives Coordinator, participated in the first Iowa visit of Japan's new Consul General in the Chicago Consulate, Jun Yanagi, and Consul Rie Arai.

On Friday, the UNI delegation joined several committee and organization members who support citizen diplomacy initiatives between Japan and Iowa for a luncheon offered by the Consul General.

On Saturday, the Japanese diplomats visited the UNI booth at the Iowa State Fair. Special thanks to Peggy Kerr, Honorary Consul of Japan in Iowa, for her support and invitation to participate in the luncheon.

The meetings focused on collaboration with Japanese universities and companies and the commitment to strengthening the Yamanashi-Iowa partnership.

We've had the privilege of creating a specialized immersion program for students from the University of Yamanashi, Japan. Their 5-week program included 1 week at the Iowa International Center in Des Moines and 4 weeks at UNI. They attended daily CIEP classes and labs along with experiencing Midwestern U.S. culture.

Collaborating with the Iowa International Center, we welcomed ten students and a visiting professor from the University of Yamanashi. They have stayed in Des Moines for one week and will be studying at the UNI Culture and Intensive English Program of the University of Northern Iowa for four weeks.

Today, they could attend a historic event celebrating the Des Moines and Kofu, Yamanashi, Japan, 65th anniversary of their vibrant relationship as sister cities.

Thank you to Mayor Higuchi of Kofu City, Yamanashi, and Mayor Cownie of Des Moines, Iowa, for supporting and strengthening the people-to-people exchanges between cities and the prefecture of Yamanashi and Iowa.
