In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, today we are spotlighting Julie Castro (Kentucky) on what her heritage means to her!

"My hispanic heritage means everything to me. I grew up never looking hispanic and knew very little spanish. As I got older I wanted to embrace who I am more. I do so with dance and my education. My father is an immigrant and I find it vital that I show him and the rest of my family how successful I can be. Show them the journey was worth it and that their hard work paid off. I want my sisters to know how special being apart of this is, as a Colombian, I grew up with a million cousins. These big groups of family are routed deeply within hispanic heritage. I find comfort and peace knowing I have a large family here in Gamma Phi Beta"

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, today we are spotlighting Delilah Aguilar (Oregon) on what her heritage means to her!

"The most defining part of my identity is the immense appreciation I have for my family and their hard work to give me opportunities they didn’t have as first generation Latino Americans. Currently, as I enter my sophomore year of college I am aware that my mother happily and proudly experiences collegiate life through the stories I bring home, which is why when I joined Gamma Phi Beta, she was all for it. My gratitude and pride for my family and their hard work drives me to strive to be the best that I can be every day, at school, work, around peers, and in my sisterhood.

Growing up Latina in a predominantly white area my family always taught me that I belong just as much as anyone else anywhere I go. That I am just as capable, and deserving as any of my peers regardless of race/ethnicity. When I first heard about Panhellenic life it sounded daunting and exclusive which made me hesitant to go through recruitment. However, as I COB’d Gamma Phi Beta not once did I feel separated from fellow members. Not only was our chapter full of girls who shared similar backgrounds to mine, but even the girls who didn’t shared similar values and it was clear their kindness and grace towards me was nothing but genuine. Diversity and our differing experiences is one of our many strengths. Sharing our perspectives allow us to walk into collegiate life open-minded, aware, and understanding of others."

Hear from Carmen on why she gives to the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation:
"I am passionate about giving back! I did not grow up in a household that had income to just give away, even to the noblest causes. But my mother did emphasize service and giving what you could. My financial giving was slow and grew as I grew professionally and financially stable. It is important to just start giving, even small gifts together have a huge impact! I always believed when you got a raise or a bonus you should pay yourself first (retirement savings), then give to something you care about before you go on a spending spree. It might not sound as exciting in the moment, but trust me, the lasting impact of both will stay with you longer than a new outfit or a random purchase you splurged on. "
