"Eco-Fashion Collection"

With this final collection, I wanted to explore the use of eco-friendly fabrics as well as more socially sustainable approaches to fashion. The fabrics I envision being used for these garments include organic cotton, h**p, and Tencel (TM.) fabrics. By keeping the production of these garments "to-order" the overall waste being produced is limited and this puts focus on quality instead of quantity. All garments would be produced in house, as a way to hire local talent, as well as locally sourced to limit carbon footprint that comes from transporting supplies across large distances. I drew inspiration from tailoring, for its intricacy and call for craftsmanship, and while normally suits and tailoring produce high amounts of waste my approach with these garments limits the waste and instead finds ways to properly recycle or reuse fabrics instead of simply discarding them.

"Eco-Fashion Collection"

For my collection, my theme is Leather-Free and all the materials are either synthetic or patent leather. I want to remind people to use synthetic leather rather than animal leather, which is more eco-friendly and ethical to people and the environment. Even animal leather is from nature, but it requires lots of chemistry, water resource, and a high level of eutrophication when raised the animals and how the tanning process took place. So to make a change in eco-footprints, I desired to make artificial (vegan) leather in my collection, which is a preferable material when compared to animal leather. My market will be the people who like to use leather as the clothing material and the people who want to spend less money on leather products, specifically for women aged 20-35. Animal leather is expensive and an eco harmless product, so using artificial leather can benefit both environment and people's needs.

"Eco-Fashion Collection"

For my collection, my theme is eco-feminism, a political movement that aligns feminist concerns with ecological ones. As such, I am taking aesthetic inspiration from a subculture that aligns itself with eco-feminist beliefs: the cottagecore movement. Cottagecore is a trendy aesthetic-based subculture that primarily features q***r women participating in agricultural life and living in harmony with nature. As such, my collection is focusing on using sustainable fabrics, such as organic cotton and linen, and organic vegetable-based dyes.

"Eco-Fashion Collection"

Wedding dresses are often worn once and either discarded or forgotten in a closet afterwards. To reduce this waste of materials and labor, I have designed a collection of wedding dresses based on existing dresses from the 1980's. This isn't a new concept; plenty of people have gotten married in a dress belonging to an older friend or relative, and those dresses are often re-tailored to new measurements and re-styled to fit new trends. However, when out of style clothing is updated, it's often accomplished by getting rid of everything that made the garment interesting. I wanted to leave as much distinct 80's style as I could. I kept some of the big sleeves, high collars, dramatically pointed bodices, and sequinned applique and just tried to make it a little sleeker and less aggressive. And I threw in some pants because there's so much fabric in some of those skirts you can pretty much do whatever.

I chose the name "Renaissance" as a reference to rediscovering something that was lost, but also because the Romantic revival of the 80's lends itself well to historically inspired styling. I was aiming for something halfway between fairytale and glam rock.

"Eco-Fashion Collection"

Gyre is a sustainable fashion collection based on upcycled plastics collected from the oceans and turned into threads or plarn (plastic yarn). The word gyre means a vortex in the middle of the ocean made by global ocean currents, which is where massive islands of garbage grow.
