The Immigration Law Society (ILS) strives to promote discussion of immigration law and policy issues that are currently impacting the United States and support any student who is interested in a career in immigration law. By hosting career panels, inviting speakers, and reaching out to local organizations that help immigrants in the Champaign-Urbana area, we hope to give students a resource to turn to and experience in this changing area of law.

This August, Illinois’ Governor Pritzker signed a new law extending the age of protection from 18 years old to 21 years old for immigrants eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. This is amazing news for youth immigrants in the state of Illinois! Check our page next week for more information on the new extension. 🗽

In a deeply disappointing press release today, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that new international students will not be granted visas if they enroll in a fully online course load. The move serves no practical purpose and will harm many students and universities.

Nonimmigrant students and schools certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) should abide by SEVP guidance originally issued in March 2020. The guidance enables schools and students to engage in distance learning in excess of regulatory limits due to the public health emergency gen...

Under pressure from public backlash and multiple lawsuits, the White House has withdrawn its cruel and unnecessary July 6 immigration directive.

The directive stated international students taking a fully online course load would not receive visas.

The Trump administration rescinds a rule that would have made international students transfer schools or leave the U.S. if their college classes go online.

We have been concerned and disappointed to see the Trump administration's announcement regarding the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). ICE announced international students taking a fully online course load due to the Covid-19 pandemic will not be granted F-1 or M-1 visas. International students, therefore, must choose between leaving the country or endangering their health. International students with pre-existing health conditions that make them more vulnerable to Covid-19 and caregivers of elderly relatives will be disproportionately affected.

The University of Illinois Immigration Law Society stands in solidarity with international students and against the ICE's inhumane policy. One thing everyone can do to help is to sign the petition below.

Allow F-1 and M-1 students to remain in the US with online-only classes
