Abebaw Yirga Adamu, a professor in higher education and the director of quality assurance at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, said he has connected with and engaged with more people than he initially anticipated during his tenure as a Global South Fellow.

He is one of five fellows accepted into the 2025-2026 fellowship program, and he wrapped up his three-month long fellowship at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in February.

Prof. Joyce Yen Feng, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign alumna and professor emerita in the Department of Social Work at 國立臺灣大學 National Taiwan University (NTU), is the recipient of the 2026 Madhuri and Jagdish N. Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement.
After earning her master’s degree from the University of Illinois School of Social Work at Illinois in 1981, and her Ph.D. in 1988, Feng went on to become a visionary figure in social welfare and innovation.
She will deliver this year’s Sheth Distinguished Alumni Lecture in celebration of her recognition from noon to 1 p.m. on April 28 in Room 103 at the Illini Union. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided.

“My grandpa never knew about my major...but I feel like I still hear him through his songs. I hear the words I don't get to hear from my family through his songs,” said Zaree Ascan, a senior architecture major at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.

Zaree has taken her grandfather’s memory with her through every step and milestone in her college career. She also carried him with her when she studied abroad for a year in Barcelona. His memory helped remind her that she could rise to meet the challenges ahead, so a hard study abroad program wasn’t going to stop her.
