Many changes physically, emotionally, and within their social lives can be damaging to self-esteem. 7 out of 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school, and relationships with friends and family members. It is essential that these teens maintain a healthy developing lifestyle while gaining a sense of who she is and
who she desires to be in the world, as well as to have a 'voice' that she feels confident in. My Sister’s Keeper will provide these teens with an opportunity to be exposed within an atmosphere of trust and respect in order to form positive relationship with group members. MSK empowers teens to help assure them of their strengths and immense potential; educating them on issues related to their background to encourage them to make a difference. They will also engage in service events throughout the community to learn the ethics of service which is the reason MSK was founded. Female University students dedicated to positively impacting the lives of high school girls will be used as a team of leaders. The girls will meet three times a month with University students where a series of planned workshops and educational activities will be held. These meetings will expose them to successful women in the Champaign-Urbana area, build life skills, and a chance to form new friendships. Right away the girls should start to feel empowered and encouraged to make healthy choices in their lives.
