The Gut Instinct Chamber Music Project:
Jewish Women in Early Music: Madama Europa, Harriett Abrams, Sara Itzig Levy

Music by Rossi, Monteverdi, Abrams, Mendelssohn, Mendelssohn Hensel, and more

This is a concert performed on historical instruments, highlighting the lives of three Jewish women who were integral to the field of early music:

Madama Europa Rossi, a 17th-century Italian soprano who is the first known professional Jewish female opera singer;

Harriett Abrams, an 18th-century English mezzo-soprano and composer;

Sara Itzig Levy, a 19th-century keyboardist, music patron, and salon hostess who was the maternal great-aunt of the composers Felix Mendelssohn and F***y Mendelssohn Hensel
