With graduation having passed, we'd like to take a moment to honor and inform you a little about one of our chapters most recent class of 2016 alumni, Blake Messerly.
Highlights of life as a Tar Heel: Two of Blakes's top experiences with Carolina have both involved the opportunity to go abroad; first a semester in Sevilla, Spain, and then again a spring break trip to Dubai with the Kenan-Flagler Business School. Each of these gave him new friends at Carolina and incredible experiences in other cultures. Furthermore, the Carolina basketball season his senior year was pretty great; whether it was watching games at He’s Not, getting to see us beat Dook at Cameron Indoor in person, or celebrating with fellow UNC students on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean after we won the ACC championship game.
Hightlights of life as a Brother of Delta Sigma Phi: The fraternity's Leadership Institute was one of the best experiences Blake had within the fraternity, as it allowed him to grow as an individual and a leader as well as make long-term friends in other chapters. Going to our national Convention last summer in New Orleans with several of the brothers was a blast as well. The moment where it all came together for him, however, was our Parent’s Cocktail this past fall. Despite being sick with pneumonia, Blake showed up for a little while as there was no missing the event he had spent months planning. Getting to stand in a circle with current brothers and alumni and sing Wagon Wheel after watching one of our brother lavaliere his girlfriend was one of the top moments in the fraternity for him. Lastly, while being President did have its downfalls and was extremely stressful/time-consuming, it was a pivotal part of Blake's fraternity experience and overall was something to look back at with pride.
Future Plans: Blake will be returning to his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia to work for Insight Sourcing Group, a boutique consulting firm.
Ultimately, Blake Messerly embodies what it means to be a better man; selfless, humble, driven, and a natural leader. During his successful term as president, his leadership inspired younger brothers to rise to the occasion when called upon and helped build them as men. It can be argued that our current president is just as good as Blake (if not better), but he would not be where he is if he had not had the opportunity to get to know Blake. We are confident you will succeed in everything to set out to do Blake and we hope you continue to build yourself and others as better men!
