🎬 Film Screening & Networking Event – Ertuğrul 1890

In collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, we invite you to a special screening of Ertuğrul 1890, a powerful story that has become a symbol of friendship between Türkiye🇹🇷 and Japan🇯🇵.

The program will begin with a short reception, offering participants the opportunity to connect and network. The film tells the story of the Ertuğrul Frigate, which sank in Japanese waters in 1890, highlighting the rescue efforts of the Japanese people. It also draws a parallel to 1985, when more than 300 Japanese citizens stranded in Iran during the Iran–Iraq War were safely evacuated by Türkiye.

Join us for an evening of history, reflection, and cross-cultural dialogue.

STOP SCROLLING 🚨🚨🚨 We have a big Announcement!!!

On Saturday, May 2, we'll be welcoming the legendary Isa Moskowitz (Isa Chandra) to the Refuge! Isa is a vegan chef and cookbook author who has redefined what vegan cooking means in the 21st-century. Through landmark cookbooks such as Veganomicon and I Can Cook Vegan, Isa has been championing accessible, affordable, and delicious vegan food for decades. We're beyond honored that she'll be joining us to share her expertise!

The event will include:

🥗 A cooking demo of vegan “beef” stew with horseradish cream and a meal featuring other Eastern European and deli favorites from Isa’s cookbooks!

🐄 A chance to spend time with our herd of eight rescued cows and meet Isa during a book signing!

📖 A copy of her latest cookbook, The 29-Minute Vegan!

If you purchase a Chef’s Table ticket, you'll also get a seat at Isa’s table during the meal where you’ll have the opportunity to ask her all of your cooking questions (and receive one of her other cookbooks!). Don't wait: these seats are limited!

We hope you'll join us for this unique opportunity! Tickets are below 🎟
