He will visit communities across eastern North Carolina to strengthen partnerships and explore how Carolina can support the region through education, research, healthcare and economic development. The tour will connect Roberts with students, alumni, military leaders, researchers and community partners as he sees Carolina’s impact across the state firsthand.

Dr. Kristin Baker ’85, ’89 (MD) has been appointed to the Board of Trustees following a vote by the University of North Carolina System Board of Governors.

A double Tar Heel, psychiatrist and former North Carolina legislator, Baker brings decades of leadership in healthcare, public service and higher education policy. She previously served on the boards of UNC Health, Carolina Alumni and most recently represented the 82nd District in the N.C. House of Representatives.

Twenty-three students received prestigious awards from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program for their research in STEM-related fields.

The highly competitive fellowships were awarded to 10 doctoral students, two master’s students and 11 undergraduate students from across the University. Their research explores topics in artificial intelligence, chemistry, mathematics, marine science, science education and more.

Zephyr Mays ’01, a brain cancer patient and U.S. Coast Guard veteran, completed last month’s Boston Marathon to support cancer research.

Since his cancer diagnosis in 2022, the former fencer has been searching for a new purpose. He found it through the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team, which allowed him to use his love of running for good. Mays raised more than $63,000 by racing and felt he was doing what he was called to do with each stride.
