UNC Department of Communication Engage. Create. Critique. 🐑 The Department of Communication includes 35 faculty, 55 graduate students, and over 750 undergraduate majors.

Through teaching, research and service, the Department of Communication: addresses the many ways communication functions to create, sustain, and transform personal life, social relations, political institutions, economic organizations, and cultural and aesthetic conventions in society; promotes competencies required for various modes of mediated and non-mediated communication; and develops skills

for analyzing, interpreting, and critiquing communication problems and questions. The Department and personnel are recognized for significant contributions to the profession, the University, state, and nation. The Department of Communication supports the University's core values encouraging diversity and equal educational and employment opportunities throughout the University community. COMM Day is this Friday! Join in Swain Hall starting at 10am to check out various films, game and sound designs, essays, performances and more from our students! There will be panels in the Black Box Theatre, Room 104 and an installation of works in the lobby until 1pm. See slide 5 for schedule ⏩️

Following COMM Day, we’ll induct the newest members into the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society. And then we’ll cap the day off with our Student Awards ceremony. All events will take place in Swain Hall.

🖼️ WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE: AN IMPERFECT HISTORY OF BLACKNESS & QUEERNESS is now on display on the first floor of Bingham Hall! This exhibition was curated by American Studies doctoral candidate, Simiyha Garrison for the 25th Anniversary Black Q***r Studies Conference held last spring, hosted by .

This exhibition serves as a synopsis of the academic and cultural evolution of Black and q***r studies over three centuries.

Beginning before emancipation, it explores national movements and cultural shifts, examining the intersections of Blackness and q***rness in daily life and the cultural imaginary.

Featuring works by Black feminist scholars, activists, and q***r theorists, it includes archival photographs, oral histories, academic texts, and key figures.

Always a Tar Heel 🐏🩵

Thanks to the alums of and the former Department of Radio, Television and Motion Pictures (RTVMP) for joining us for our Back to Bingham Alumni Brunch. Faculty, staff and alums gathered to connect and share in memories of their time at UNC and in Bingham Hall.

Faculty emeritus Dr. Dick Elam (1977-1991) was honored with a plaque, received by daughter Mickey in attendance. Monty Hagler ’88 was recognized as a 2026 Distinguished COMM Alum award recipient.

📽️ Our first CLE event of the spring semester will be a screening of Freight: The Five Incarnations of Abel Green by COMM’s Piller Professor of the Practice, Howard L. Craft. Stick around afterward for a Q&A session with Howard, Joseph Megel (director) and star of the production, J. Alphonse Nicholson who is best known for his role on Starz’s “P-Valley”. This event is free and open to the public. CLE credit is available.
