Meet Ernest Johnson, a first-year DDS student at UNC Adams School of Dentistry. Johnson credits a childhood dentist's promise to fix his teeth with shaping his path into the field. Before starting the DDS program this fall, he studied nutrition at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, minored in music and chemistry, and researched bone-growth drugs in the Miguez Lab. UNC Adams School of Dentistry alumni Dr. Michael Kretchmer (DDS, MS '02) and Dr. Michael Stella (DDS, MS '06) have endowed a fellowship to support periodontal residents. The gift, made through their practice, Tar Heel Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, is rooted in their own experiences as residents and wanting to give back to the community they've been a part of for decades.

Meet Dr. Taylor Spruill, a recent General Practice Residency graduate from our Advanced Dental Education program — she shares what a typical day at ASOD looked like for her.

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry GPR Program is a 12-month program (with an optional second year) with the goal to create a supportive environment that helps residents grow into the dental leaders they aim to be. Graduates go on to private general dentistry, advanced specialty training, lead hospital and community dental programs, serve in military and VA medical centers, hold federal administrative roles, take full- or part-time academic positions, and more. Huge congratulations to MedNorth Health Center on opening their incredible new 35,000 sq. ft. building in Wilmington! 🎉🦷

Dr. Zachary Brian was thrilled to be on-site earlier this month, representing the Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD) and cheering on our partners. MedNorth is a vital partner in our mission to deliver community-based service-learning through the Dentistry in Service to Community (DISC) program—helping us expand access to high-quality dental care where it's needed most.

With expanded dental operatories and integrated clinical care under one roof, this new space will make a life-changing difference for patients across the region. We are so grateful for MedNorth’s support and partnership, and we can’t wait to see all they accomplish in this next chapter!
