Great to see the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health MHA community come together for some Tar Heel football! 🏈

Our first and second-year MHA students joined program alumni for a tailgate this weekend, connecting across cohorts and career stages. These informal gatherings are where some of the best mentorship happens—current students getting advice on career paths, alumni sharing insights from the field, and everyone building the professional relationships that make our healthcare leadership network so strong.

There's something special about the bonds formed in this program that extend well beyond the classroom. Whether you're navigating coursework or leading health systems, once a Tar Heel, always a Tar Heel.

Meet MHA student Benjamin Holroyd, who interned this summer at Cleveland Clinic (Hospital Operations - Northeastern Ohio Market).

In his words:"During my internship at Cleveland Clinic, I had the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of operational projects, from data analysis and dashboard creation to project management across various regional hospitals. These experiences strengthened my commitment to operational excellence and affirmed my desire to grow as a servant leader in healthcare who uplifts and encourages others and strives to bring out the best in those around me."

Our students don't just learn—they contribute.

Proud to spotlight HPM Assistant Professor Samuel Baxter, PhD, MPH, co-author of groundbreaking new research on masculinity and colorectal cancer screening published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Dr. Baxter and his research team discovered that masculinity norms—like minimizing health issues or fearing judgment—can reduce men's willingness to get screened for colorectal cancer. But here's the hopeful part: men who embraced their provider role were more likely to be screened, and nearly 80% expressed willingness to take action when met with respect and culturally grounded messaging.

This work provides actionable insights that can immediately improve health outcomes and centers the voices of men who are too often left out of both the conversation and the care.

Learn more here:

Addressing masculinity-related barriers, particularly Health Problem Minimization, could help increase CRC screening uptake among men. Future intervention strategies should consider reframing CRC screening as an act of self-care and strength, emphasizing health empowerment rather than aligning solel...
