On May 14 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., join the Arts and Humanities Grant Studio and College of Arts & Sciences Research Support Team for an IAH-sponsored event titled, “Grant Perspectives Workshop: Big, Bad Budgets.”

Telling the story of your project, advocating for what you need to make it flourish, and navigating the financial systems of your institution are necessary skills when developing a successful budget. In this workshop, we’ll break down the building blocks of budgets and bring you a new level of confidence for your next grant or fellowship submission.

The event will take place in Hyde Hall’s Incubator Room. All are welcome, and lunch will be provided. See the event page on the IAH website for more information: https://go.unc.edu/Ky5k4

Ana Silva Campo (FFP ’24) was a doctoral student when she arrived at the historical archives in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, to ask for the city’s 17th-century colonial records. For her dissertation, Silva Campo planned to research the experiences of people of African descent, both enslaved and free, in the city. The answer presented a complication: there were no colonial records for that time period.

Rather than use judicial archives for her research, Silva Campo looked at the financial records from the Spanish Inquisition’s tribunal in Cartagena – something that hadn’t been done before.

Romance studies professor Lucia Binotti will tell you that being a philologist-turned-experimental-humanist is central to her work. Philologists — from the Greek, “love of words” or “love of learning” — were scholars of ancient languages and texts. What you might not know, Binotti proposes, is that they were also innovative thinkers.

Today, Binotti has developed numerous digital humanities initiatives, receiving grant support from the Center for Faculty Excellence and Lenovo, the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and others.

Romance studies professor Lucia Binotti has long combined a love of words with a passion for using digital technologies in her research and teaching.
