The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has awarded UNC Hussman Associate Professor Allison Lazard and UNC Department of Psychology and Neuroscience Professor Barbara Fredrickson a $3 million grant to support their interdisciplinary health communication research to combat isolation in young adults.

Fredrickson has studied the health benefits of social connection for decades and in this new research project, she pairs up with Lazard, an expert in how visual design influences message perception, especially in a digital environment. As the principal investigators of this study, they will test whether, how, where and for whom social media messages can reduce social isolation in young adults.

UNC Hussman graduate Tushar Varma has also been tapped to help support this study.

Hi all,

I'm reaching out to invite you to participate in our 2nd annual BraiN.C. event (building relationships across institutions in North Carolina). The event is hosted by UNC and will occur on June 12. Our goal is to bring together faculty and students from NCA&T, NCCU, and UNC to facilitate connections between members of our institutions. I've attached a flyer with information about the event. Below is a link you can use to indicate your interest in participating (and if there are trainee's you'd like to include):

This year will feature a brainstorming activity in the afternoon. Teams will group up based on interest and come up with a research pitch. The idea is for these to generate student-led projects with mentorship teams comprised of members from multiple institutions. Teams will have the opportunity to submit their research pitch in the week following the event to win one of two $500 awards.
