🎉Last week, Rico had the honor of serving as a panelist at the 2026 Student Health and Wellbeing Conference.

Each year, Charleston’s five colleges come together to discuss the current state of student wellbeing across campus communities, and share ideas on how to create a better future and environment for our students.💡

Rico represented The Citadel🏰, beside two other panelists representing CofC and MUSC.

The panel's topic was focused on men's mental health, something Rico is passionate about. đź’Ş

🎉🎉Congrats to Dr. Mazzaro on being awarded this year's Lawton Ellis Award!!!

🏆He was chosen because of his dedication and support to the students, his role, and the world of engineering 🏆

⬇⬇⬇Please take a moment to read about the history of the award below⬇⬇⬇⬇

The award is named for two dear friends of The Citadel. Mr. Lawton Ellis was born in Barnwell, SC in 1893. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy, served in World War II, and taught engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy, Georgia Tech, and the University of New Mexico. He passed away in 1977.

His wife Emmah Ellis graduated as valedictorian of her class in Conway, AR in 1922 and from the University of Arkansas in 1926 where she was a charter member of the university’s chapter of the Kappa Kappa Gamma (KKG) women’s fraternity. She later served as President of the National KKG organization, was inducted into its Hall of Fame, and was recognized as an outstanding alumnus in 1994. She passed away in 2008. The gift supporting this award was given from her trust.

The award is presented every year to a faculty member in our ECE Department. Nominations may be made by students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The winner is selected by a committee of recent recipients of the award. The criteria for selection are: exemplary teaching, a record of involvement with student organizations and the community, and demonstrated breadth of interests outside the engineering field.
