Meet Daniel, a Master of Science in Biomedical Science student!

In the lab, Daniel is preparing experiments to study how pancreatic islets respond to oxidative stress. His research focuses on peroxiredoxin, an enzyme that acts like a protective shield for these cells. When that shield becomes overwhelmed, it can disrupt normal cell function, providing important insight into how diabetes develops at the cellular level.

After graduation, Daniel plans to pursue medical school with the goal of bridging laboratory research and clinical practice to provide more informed, evidence-based care for future patients.

Meet Skylar, third year PhD in the .jrink lab! Her research focuses on how binge alcohol consumption alters the brain in ways that can turn casual drinking into something more excessive. Her goal is to understand which pathways are involved, so she can find safe, non-invasive neuromodulation techniques that can prevent alcohol use disorder.

Meet Gavin, A third year PhD Candidate in the Neuroscience department in the .jrink lab. During Alcohol Awareness Month, we wanted to highlight his research that studies how chronic stress and alcohol impair the prefrontal cortex, the brain’s major top-down control center, making people more susceptible to developing Alcohol Use Disorder. His goal is to identify new targets for precision medicine that can help patients reclaim control over their lives.

It’s Alcohol Awareness Month! Did you know that alcohol is one of the leading causes of preventable death within the United States? And that stress is a key risk factor in the development of alcohol use disorder? Scientists like Katie in the Rinker Lab study the interaction between stress and alcohol using advanced techniques to manipulate genes and test behavior in order to further understand the systems in the brain involved with alcohol addiction.

What a week! Graduate students play such an important role in the institution by pushing boundaries, sparking innovation and driving discovery every day.

Throughout Graduate Student Appreciation Week, the College of Gradate Studies celebrated them with activities all week long—from a potted plant bar, personalized music on the greenway, plenty of wagging tails at “Coffee & Canines”, to a happy hour at the Harbour Club.

And we brought the food, the plants, the music and vibes, the sweet treats, the caffeine and yes—plenty of dogs. Graduate Student Appreciation Week is in full swing!
