Meet Amber Hazzard, 4th year Biomedical Sciences PhD strident in the DeLeon-Pennell Lab. Her research focuses on the gut-heart axis in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD. Through her work, Amber investigates whether targeting the gut microbiome could serve as a novel therapeutic strategy for improving cardiovascular health in individuals with PTSD.

Her passion resides in improving science literacy and accessibility through effective communication and outreach. She recently completed the SC-SWIFT internship and AAAS Mass Media fellowship, where she wrote articles that made complex scientific topics approachable for broad audiences.

Meet Daniel, a Master of Science in Biomedical Science student!

In the lab, Daniel is preparing experiments to study how pancreatic islets respond to oxidative stress. His research focuses on peroxiredoxin, an enzyme that acts like a protective shield for these cells. When that shield becomes overwhelmed, it can disrupt normal cell function, providing important insight into how diabetes develops at the cellular level.

After graduation, Daniel plans to pursue medical school with the goal of bridging laboratory research and clinical practice to provide more informed, evidence-based care for future patients.
