✨ It’s a double alumni feature today! Yes, that’s right, the recently crowned Miss Global United States 2022 is a two time graduate of College of Charleston Department of Communication with both her bachelor’s AND master’s degree in Communication from College of Charleston! 🌟

{repost from College of Charleston Alumni} Sara Burd ’17 (MA ’19) competed as Miss Minnesota Global USA and was crowned Miss Global USA 2022 in July in Orlando, FL. Ms. Burd is also a Professional Model for Envy Models & Talent and a GIA-certified Jewelry Sales Associate/Jeweler. She attended Concordia College from 2012-2014 to earn a minor in Norwegian language. While at the College for her undergraduate career, Ms. Burd majored in communication and minored in French and Francophone studies. She joined Kappa Alpha Theta and competed for the Miss College of Charleston title, where she placed third in her first year, and second the following year. In 2019, Ms. Burd earned her MA in communications from CofC. She won her first pageant title at 23 as Miss South Carolina Global. Ms. Burd says, “As the new Miss Global USA, I hope to use my platform to promote peace through understanding, something that was always at the forefront of my studies at the College of Charleston.” She currently resides in Clearwater, FL.

Congratulations, graduate faculty Dr. Milner! 👏👏

🥁 Drum roll please… 🥁

Introducing the newest Chair of the Department of Communication: Dr. Ryan M. Milner!

Dr. Milner earned his Ph.D. from The University of Kansas and has been a faculty member at the College of Charleston since 2012. He teaches courses such as Media in the Digital Age, Digital Media Ethics, and a capstone class in Podcasting. With research expertise in internet culture, he studies how online interactions (everything from and to Twitter debates and propaganda campaigns) influence and impact society, politics, and culture. He’s the co-author of the recently published book “You Are Here: A Field Guide for Navigating Polarized Speech, Conspiracy Theories, and Our Polluted Media Landscape” (2021), co-author of “The Ambivalent Internet: Mischief, Oddity, and Antagonism Online” (2017), and author of “The World Made Meme: Public Conversations and Participatory Media” (2016). He has also contributed commentary to outlets like TIME , Slate.com, Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB), NBC News, and The New York Times.
