A World of Jewish Culture at Piccolo Spoleto began in 1998 as a public celebration of Israel’s fiftieth birthday. Held this year in conjunction with the Pearlstine/Lipov Center for Southern Jewish Culture’s Summer Institute for university educators, this year’s festival will focus on Southern Jewish music and film.
Charleston’s early Jewish history includes several significant American firsts: the first Hebrew Orphan Society, the first Hebrew Benevolent Society, the first Jew elected to public office, the first Temple sisterhood, the first sustained movement to reform Judaism in America, and the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in the South.
