It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Ewen “Lefty” Bryden on Tuesday, March 9th.

Lefty was a huge part of EIU for many years. Even after his retirement, he stayed active with the Leisure Services Department (later Recreation Administration) at EIU and the Charleston community.

Please share this information with anyone who knew Lefty!

The Village of Mt. Zion, Illinois (pop. 5,833) is seeking applications for a full-time Director of
Parks and Recreation. Applicant should have a bachelor’s degree (BA) in Parks, Recreation and
Leisure Studies or similar field; 1-3 years’ experience in a management role; or equivalent
combination of education and experience. This position is responsible for the operation and
maintenance of the Parks and Recreation Department. Desirable candidates should have the
ability to provide effective leadership within the organization and develop and maintain
positive working relationships with village employees, board and commission members and the
public. A complete list of duties, responsibilities and requirements can be provided upon
request. Salary $30,000 DOQ plus benefits including health insurance, IMRF Retirement, Paid
Holiday, Vacation and Sick time, and Dental Coverage. Employment applications are available at

"Dr. Barkley,

Montana State Parks and Recreation would appreciate your aid in circulating an exciting position within your circles and with the alumni of Eastern Illinois University’s Department of Recreation Administration. We are currently accepting applications for the Montana State Trails Coordinator. This position is to promote the establishment, maintenance and access of recreational trails in Montana. The incumbent should possess a thorough knowledge of the National, environmental assessment procedures, and environmental impact statement procedural requirements.

This position administers the Recreational Trail’s Program for the State of Montana, one of the main funding mechanisms for trail work for all agencies and partners across the state. This is an advanced position and will require someone who has both knowledge of fiscal and grant administration, trail work, and a passion for creating partnerships and community building.

Here are a couple photos from the trip to the IPRA conference this past weekend in Chicago. It was so fun to spend time with students and alum. Being a part of the EIU REC family is awesome.
