African American Studies at CofC

African American Studies at CofC African American Studies began as a discipline formally with a student strike at San Francisco State in 1968.

Students demanded that the history and culture of black Americans be included as part of the curriculum and intellectual life on their campus. The African American Studies Program at the College of Charleston carries on that legacy. Offering both an interdisciplinary major and minor, the program focuses on the study of African American experiences. African American Studies aims to provide students

an understanding of the history and culture of African Americans; to introduce students to the diversity of African American experiences in a variety of disciplines; to promote the study of African American history and culture in the larger community; and to make African American Studies an integral part of intellectual life at the College of Charleston. Students with degrees in African American Studies pursue careers in various areas, such as law, politics, medicine, art, teaching, entertainment, and journalism.

AAST 255: Critical Debates in African American Studies takes you to the front lines of the intellectual battles that shaped Black history. This semester, we’re focusing on The State of Black Education.

From the foundational theories of pioneers like W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington to the modern-day fight against institutional inequities, we’re asking the hard questions about how education can be a tool for liberation.

The Charleston Area Justice Ministry (CAJM) is having their annual Nehemiah Action Annual Meeting, Monday, April 27 at 6:30 pm. Past meetings have brought together members of the faith-based community and organizations to discuss issues determined by the people for the people. As a member organization, E3 is inviting you to be our guest for this powerful night.

This year, members of CAJM have determined 3 areas to discuss and hear updates from our local elected officials:

School Board Governance for the Charleston County School Board;
Protection for Gadsden Creek; and Food Security for ALL.

We are going to ask our local leaders to step in where they have been silent and we need a full house to make that ask land. With an expected attendance close to 1,500 people, the E3 team invites you to be our personal guest.
