Big news for preservation in Charleston.

St. John’s Reformed Episcopal Church (1850) has been selected as a 2026 Preserving Black Churches Grant recipient by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The funding will help address masonry damage and water infiltration, supporting the stabilization of this historic church connected to the legacy of renowned Charleston blacksmith Philip Simmons.

A big shout out to our second-year students and faculty Amelia Spade, Carter Hudgins, Frances Ford, and Luke Pecoraro for their work supporting the project.

Charleston honors a leader in climate resilience.

Charleston City Council recently voted to name a new Johns Island park after Dale Morris, the city’s former Chief Resilience Officer, CDCC professor, and a major advocate for innovative water management.

Morris helped lead Charleston’s Dutch Dialogues initiative, which encouraged cities to rethink flooding and learn to live with water rather than simply fight it.

The newly named Dale Morris Ecological Park will be part of the Barberry Woods Drainage Improvement Project, a $5.8 million effort focused on wetland restoration and green stormwater infrastructure.

When completed in 2026, the project is expected to provide flood relief for more than 3,400 residents and nearly 1,700 homes on Johns Island.

A reminder that resilient cities are shaped not just by infrastructure—but by the people who imagine new ways of living with water.
