Meet Taylor Steele!

She is a Junior on the women’s basketball team and is a Biological Sciences major from Highland, Indiana.

“Inclusion is such an important aspect of student-athletes because each team is made up of people from different ethnicities, countries, and states. This campaign allows students of different backgrounds to come together and recognize how important diversity is to athletics. Diversity allows teammates to learn new cultures, and languages and be inclusive to all."

Inclusion and diversity mean a lot to me and always have meant a lot. I am from Serbia which is in the far eastern part of Europe. When I first came to this country I didn’t know English nor did I know how to act around people because of the differences in culture. I luckily met some kids playing basketball and they helped me with everything that would lead me to feeling less different. Still till this day they are some of my best friends and always will be. Regardless of the gender, race, ethnicity, or religion of a person at the end of the day we are all humans. We should always try to help one another and making people feel important by including them makes a huge difference in that person’s life. Diversity is also key so we can constantly learn from one another and see how other cultures live their lives. Personally I believe if we were all the same life would be kind of boring. There wouldn’t be a need to get to know anyone and you would never learn anything new. Therefore, I believe inclusion and diversity are a huge part in everyday human life. The more people that are around is that are different from you and the more people that we can include in life will only help us in the long run. Just show love to everyone and be happy!

As Student-Athletes, we are more than just our sports.

Watch for SAAC’s involvement in this year’s NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Social Media Campaign as we feature athletes from each of our sports. We’ll have statements from athletes on Instagram and Facebook, so follow us on both!

For more information on the Campaign, please visit the NCAA Website on Diversity and Inclusion!
