Smith: Inside Excellence | Isaiah Nickerson

From the golf course to the greenhouse — Isaiah Nickerson, JCSU Class of ‘24, came to Charlotte chasing a dream and leaves with a vision that’s entirely his own. Business graduate. Golf team captain. And now, a Master of Social Work. Isaiah is using the fairway and the garden as tools for healing — and Charlotte hasn’t seen anything yet. Congratulations, Isaiah. This is what excellence looks like at Johnson C. Smith University.

Three powerful South Carolina-born leaders came together in Charlotte for an unforgettable evening on political history and democracy in America. Congressman Jim Clyburn’s Fireside Chat and Book-signing, organized by the D. Wilson Agency, featured Clyburn’s new book, The First Eight, and the enduring lessons of Reconstruction. Charlotte icon and former mayor, Harvey Gantt, served as moderator while JCSU President Valerie Kinloch, Ph.D. delivered a powerful introduction. She recalled growing up in Charleston, a young girl learning about the incredible achievements of Harvey B. Gantt and James Clyburn - and the work they were doing in the community.

During the conversation, Congressman Clyburn unpacked the history of black congressional leadership in the United States – dating back to the 19th Century - while shining a bright light on the work and sacrifices of Reconstruction-era Congressman Robert Smalls and Congressman George Washington Murray. Rep. Clyburn reflected on how Reconstruction came to an abrupt halt when Jim Crow became “the law of the land." He discussed the cyclical nature of history, advocating for education - particularly the raw history he excavates and recalls in his book.

Thank you to Kevin Monroe (EVP) and DeAlva Wilson Arnold (CEO) with the D. Wilson Agency and First Baptist Church West for organizing and hosting the event! Johnson C. Smith University was glad to join you in this amazing event.

History made. 👏

Johnson C. Smith University has claimed its first-ever North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities NCICU Ethics Bowl championship becoming the first HBCU to take home the title in the competition’s 15-year history.

Competing against 18 teams under the theme “Ethics in Leadership,” JCSU students brought thoughtful debate, powerful perspective and undeniable teamwork to the stage, ultimately defeating NC Wesleyan University in the final round.
