The College of Arts + Architecture is comprised of five academic units and the university’s performing arts center:

School of Architecture
Department of Art & Art History
Department of Dance
Department of Music
Department of Theatre
Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts

Through these academic units we offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the fine and performing arts, professi

onally-accredited degrees in architecture, arts education degrees in concert with the College of Education, and joint/dual degree options with many units across our campus. It is the dynamic of “crossing boundaries” that distinguishes both the work of the arts and the culture of the College of Arts + Architecture. A team from the David R. Ravin School of Architecture has been chosen to participate in the inaugural Housing Innovation Challenge, a national design-build competition that brings students together with builders to help address the affordable housing crisis 🏠

The UNC Charlotte team, led by Associate Professor Marc Manack, is one of 10 academic teams selected nationwide to advance. The competition was announced at the 19th Housing Innovation Summit in Uptown Charlotte, where the city is serving as the inaugural host.

The 13 students worked in three teams, each developing a distinct proposal.

1️⃣ “Three Ply,” developed by Sundus Abu Reyal (leader), David Mba, David Peterson and Quincy Rackley, presents a modular design that can be adapted for two, three or four units built out of cross-laminated timber.

2️⃣ “CottageCORE,” designed by Lela Holt (leader), Jeremiah Boswell, Sean Cornelius, Timothy Graham and Ashley Parsons, positions two duplexes around a cottage courtyard, increasing density and encouraging social connection.

3️⃣ “Under One Roof,” designed by Gabrielle Ciceron (leader), Shane Deas, Jasmine McConnell and Meckayla Marc, integrates a primary residence and two accessory dwelling units into a single structure that features a generous front porch, adding density while keeping the appearance of a traditional home.

The team has been assigned a lot on Pegram Street in the Belmont neighborhood. Over the next 16 months, students will decide which design to pursue, refine it, and work with building partner BuildLabs to prefabricate and install a full-scale home.

In October 2027, completed homes from all 10 teams will be on view during a multi-day public exhibition before becoming occupied by residents.

The median home price in Charlotte is nearly $444,000, requiring a household income of more than $146,000 to afford — almost double Mecklenburg County's median household income.

“At a time when communities across the country face urgent housing challenges, it is essential that emerging designers develop innovative, interdisciplinary and forward-looking solutions that expand access, improve quality of life and reimagine the future of housing," says SoA Director Blaine Brownell.

"My favorite thing about CoA+A is the different classes we're offered, the events they hold for us, and all the people I can meet within the college that have similar majors!"

Constanza Martell-Cote, B.A. in Dance with a concentration in Choreography, Performance, and Theory '27, is this week's spotlight!

🌟 What kind of career do you hope to have?
I want to be a performer for a little longer, and then, once I get older, become a dance teacher/choreographer.

💚 When you are not in class, what do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy grabbing lunch and catching up with friends, as well as going to campus events together. I also love watching TV, sleeping, and eating. Most of all, I cherish spending time with my family and doing activities with them.

Earlier this month, theatre major Ariana Zappley gave the first public performance of "Shakespeare's Sass" for students at Garinger High School 🎭

Conceived and developed by Rob Conkie, our Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare Studies, the theatre piece draws from Shakespeare's plays to present six women -- some merry, some honest, some green in judgment, some cold in blood -- all strong characters.

With the aid of Elle Billips, Taylor McNamara and a few willing participants from the audience, Ariana moved in and out of the different characters by means of a hat here, a shawl there, and the occasional mask or crown.

The Garinger students were a friendly audience, and we loved the opportunity to visit their classroom and have some fun!

More performances of "Shakespeare's Sass" are in the works, so stay tuned!

"Growing up, I always had a creative interest, whether it was sketching, watercoloring or assembling Harry Potter Legos with my sister. When I got to high school, I started taking drafting and getting involved in clubs that got me interested in architecture. In 2018, I attended UNC Charlotte’s Summer Architecture Camp, which helped me decide that architecture and Charlotte was the place for me!"

Recent grad Samantha Brennan, B.A. in Architecture and Masters in Architecture '26, is this week's spotlight!

Sam is now working full-time at LS3P through the IPAL program.

"IPAL has given me the opportunity to intern at an architecture firm part time during the school year and full time over the summer," she shares. "Through my internship, I’ve been able to collaborate on design projects, go on site visits, and build client relationships. I’m excited to be continuing full-time with LS3P now that I’ve graduated!”

🏛️ What kind of career do you hope to have?
Through architecture, I hope to use my design skills to support the needs of growing communities. I like how architecture still allows me to be creative, but channels it toward a service to provide for others. During my career, I hope to work on projects that are sustainable, people-centered, and support meaningful change.

🇮🇹 What is your favorite thing about the School of Architecture?
My favorite experience with the architecture department was the study abroad trip to Rome during my fourth-year spring semester. I really enjoyed wandering through the city, studying Roman architecture, and eating lots and lots of gelato. The highlight of the trip was riding up to the top of the Carrara marble quarries during our trip to Tuscany.

Congrats, to Sam!!

We love visiting local schools to share our work!

On May 1, students in theatre professor Beth Murray's “Picture Books Into Theatre” course visited elementary and high school classrooms at Mountain Island Charter School to present classroom drama and playscripts that they adapted this semester from children's picture books.

One group, pictured here, went to the elementary classroom of music teacher Jessi Clarkson.

First, the theatre students shared a process-drama based on the book “The Day the Crayons Quit,” which was planned/scripted by theatre student Erick Flowers and Beth Murray.

Then the ensemble shared three additional scripted pieces: “Knight Owl,” adapted by Mollie Epstein; “The Kissing Hand,” adapted by Ciel Davis; and “Stinky & the Nightmare,” which was adapted by Ava (Teddy) Clarkson from her grandfather’s book.

Other UNC Charlotte theatre students involved include Maddie Crisp, Angelica Keenan, Maxwell Martin, Tina Mendinacelli and Karissa Kimbrell.
