Sid Stroupe donated these amazing membership cards from Charlotte area q***r bars and clubs. They all date from around 1978-1982 - the period that Sid was an undergrad in the area.

The materials were originally sent to who graciously passed them along to us.

When the AIDS Memorial Quilt was first displayed on the National Mall in 1987, it contained 1,920 panels commemorating people who had died of the disease. Most of the quilt’s blocks are rectangles measuring 6 feet by 3 feet, or roughly the size of a grave. Many were individually crafted by people whose friends and family members succumbed to AIDS. Today, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is a 54-ton tapestry that includes nearly 50,000 panels dedicated to more than 105,000 individuals.

Photograph from the RAIN Records of the AIDS Memorial Quilt block in memory of Christopher Gerhardt, 1968-1997, of Raleigh, NC. The women in the photograph are unidentified. This block is currently part of Block #5369 of the interactive quilt maintained by

More amazing anti-Helms materials from the Sue Henry Papers - this time a roll of toilet paper. It's not everyday that archives get to preserve toilet paper!

Apologies for not providing prior context regarding the Jesse Helms protest materials. They are present in our LGBTQ+ collections because folks have myriad political interests, but also because Helms' response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic was notoriously homophobic. He made numerous statements regarding his belief that HIV was punishment for gay individuals, including the following:

"The government should spend less money on people with AIDS because they got sick as a result of deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."

The first attempt to establish a space for LGBTQ+ students on the UNC Charlotte campus took place close to 40 years ago when the Gay Student Union was formed. Congratulations to Nikolai and to all the students working on the UNCC LGBTQ Center!

Congrats to Nikolai Mather, who won this year's Champions of Pride Young Catalyst Award, for being honored in Creative Loafing's "Best of Charlotte" issue! Nikolai has been working (successfully!) to establish an LGBTQ student center at UNC-Charlotte! Pick up a print edition or read it online to learn more about Nikolai's work!
