Sister Nicole Villavicencio (FA16 #1) is staying in San Jose, Costa Rica for the next couple of weeks! She's currently taking Spanish classes for her Latin American Studies major. Laverne Cox was born in Mobile, Alabama - with her identical twin brother! Her role in Orange is the New Black propelled her to prominence.

She attended Alabama School of Fine Arts, Indiana University Bloomington and Marymount Manhattan College where she studied creative writing, dance and acting. She also recently received an honorary doctorate from The New School for her activism in the fight for gender equity and the LGBTQ movement. •
Before Orange is the New Black, Laverne appeared as a contestant on the first season of I Want to Work for Diddy. From this visibility, she was approached by VH1 and created the makeover television series TRANSform Me, which made her first Black transgender person to produce and star in her own TV show - which won a GLAAD media award!

Since then, she’s graced the cover of numerous magazines, including being the first openly trans person on the cover of Time magazine -and most recently was one of the faces of Beyonce’s Ivy Park clothing line. •

A self-described “black, le***an, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde dedicated her life and work to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia.
She was born in New York City to West Indian immigrant parents - but her essays and poetry have stretched the diaspora and continue to be a guiding force in the fight for equity and liberation.
Audre is a fierce advocate for justice and someone whose work and life should be celebrated every day.

Our Sisters Karla Mendiola (SPR 18, #3) and Jessica Benitez (SPR 18, #4) had the honor of attending LatinaCon, a Latino-American Women's Conference, on behalf of Dr. Claire Schuch's invitation. .
Our Sisters had a great time learning and exchanging ideas! We even ran into the Lovely Ladies of !! .
Also our Sister Jessica got to show off her skills at the conference by helping Beauty Heart in their special events make up booth! 💋 If you ever need help she's your woman for the job!

This month, we celebrate our LGBTQIA+ sisters and siblings who live boldly in their truths and are continuing the fight for genuine liberation - beyond marriage equality.
·
We honor with heavy hearts as we know our trans sisters are still being murdered, our undocumented siblings, many of whom left their countries due to violence against them because of their sexual orientation, are not being supported in the ways they deserve, and regardless of marriage equality, many of our q***r sisters and siblings still experience homelessness and discrimination at high rates.
·
As the fierce Marsha P. Johnson said "No PRIDE for some of us without liberation for all of us."
·
For the rest of this month, we will be sharing stories of LGBTQ activists (within our sisterhood) and beyond as a reminder of the work we must all engage in as family, allies, accomplices and members of our LGBTQIA communities.
