Supporting the students, alumni, housestaff and faculty of the UVA School of Medicine A board of directors governs the Medical Alumni Association.

The University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association, established in 1949, is an independent organization dedicated to serving the School of Medicine, the University of Virginia, and more than 17,000 student, alumni, faculty and housestaff constituents. The University of Virginia Medical School Foundation, established in 1972, exists as the financial arm of the University of Virginia Medical Alum

ni Association. Its mission is to receive, invest, manage and disburse funds for the express purpose of maintaining and constantly improving the state of excellence of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. The trustees and officers promote a climate that empowers those with whom we serve, while stewarding our human and financial resources. The UVA Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation operates as an independent 501(C)(3) organization. With an office located at 1111 West Main Street and a small, full-time staff, the association sponsors more than 50 annual programs and events for students, alumni, and housestaff. Some of the most popular events and programs include Medical School Reunion Weekend, the White Coat Ceremony (endowed by the Class of 1965), MedConnect mentoring sessions, and Family Day. In addition, the association publishes the Virginia Medicine bi-annual magazine and bi-monthly e-newsletter, as well as content on UVAMedAlum.org and social media channels. Special student services include an emergency loan program, scholarship assistance, the Host program, LegacyConnect, and Global Health Travel Awards.

The Class of 1967 Joseph F. Smiddy, MD Altruism Award honors two fourth-year medical students who demonstrate selfless service to medically underserved communities and generosity in serving others.

This year’s recipients are Margaret (Meg) Mercante and Muhammad Zulfiqar.

Following the sudden loss of a classmate to Brugada syndrome, Meg co-founded and led the Benefit for Brugada, transforming a period of grief into a community-wide effort that raised $12,000 to expand AED access and CPR training in Charlottesville. Beyond this initiative, she has served as co-director of UVA’s Homeless Consult Service, helping hospitalized patients navigate barriers to housing, insurance, transportation, and follow-up care, while also leading outreach through AccessMed, SPOTS, and UVA’s skin cancer screening programs.

As the child of an immigrant family, Muhammad has turned his experience navigating the healthcare system into programs that expand access to care for uninsured patients, including an insurance enrollment navigation program at the Charlottesville Free Clinic and the HS Bridge Initiative, a statewide referral network for patients with hidradenitis suppurativa. His service also extends internationally, where he organized community food drives for children experiencing homelessness in Uganda and established an ongoing dermatology education partnership between UVA and Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

Congratulations to Maya Hagander, SMD'27, recipient of the Maxwell C. Feinman, MD Class of 1954 Community Service Award for the 2026-2027 academic year. This award is presented annually to a fourth-year UVA medical student who has performed outstanding community service in the Charlottesville area.

During her time as a medical student, Maya’s community service has included volunteering with WellAware on the Health Streets/Healthy People event, partnering with Stepping Stone of Charlottesville to support local families with young children, and helping to coordinate recurring community health fairs and free sports physical screenings serving children and families in Charlottesville.

It's time for another Then and Now! Today we're featuring Misky Sharif, MD '24.

Dr. Sharif is a pediatric resident at Children's National in Washington, DC. She is seen her celebrating with her family at the Diploma Ceremony in 2024 and, more recently, at some recent activities during her residency.

Her advice:

"To all our amazing medical students, each of you brings something uniquely special to this profession—a light, perspective, and energy that no one else can replicate. Medicine is important, but so are you.

There will be days when taking care of yourself feels difficult, when the workload feels heavy, and when rest feels like something you have to earn. In those moments, try not to lose sight of the person behind the white coat, the person who matters just as much as the care you give to others. Though it is often easier said than done, please give yourself grace. You are learning, growing, and becoming in real time, and that process is not meant to be perfect.

Most importantly, know that you are not doing this alone. There are mentors, peers, friends, family, and a whole community consistently rooting for you. Even on the days when confidence feels distant, there are people who believe in your ability to keep going, to keep learning, and to keep showing up. You got this! 🧡💙"

Former UVA resident Nassima Ait-Daoud Tiouririne, MD, a nationally recognized physician-scientist and academic leader, is the new chair of UVA's Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. She has served as interim chair since September 2025.

Ait-Daoud Tiouririne joined UVA after completing a National Institutes of Health-funded fellowship in addiction research at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She earned her medical degree from the University of Algiers and completed residencies in psychiatry in Algeria and at UVA Health.

Board-certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine, Ait-Daoud Tiouririne’s primary research focus is on developing innovative treatments for substance use disorders, including neuromodulation, pharmacotherapy and digital therapeutics. She is also principal investigator on multiple federally funded trials, and her work seeks to improve outcomes for individuals with addiction through advances in neuroscience and translational research.

Thanks to all who joined us in-person and virtually for today's White Coat Ceremony, endowed by the Class of 1965, as we officially welcomed medical students in the Class of 2030 to the UVA School of Medicine.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation following the ceremony as we sheltered indoors due to a local tornado warning. We hope everyone made it home safely.
