UVA Health Children’s has become the first hospital in Virginia to use an Impella heart pump in a patient under 18.
Michael McCulloch, head of pediatric cardiology at UVA Health Children’s, said one benefit of the device, which is designed to support some patients whose hearts cannot pump enough blood through the body on their own, is that it can allow patients to stay mobile while receiving heart support.
