UVA Health Children’s has become the first hospital in Virginia to use an Impella heart pump in a patient under 18.

Michael McCulloch, head of pediatric cardiology at UVA Health Children’s, said one benefit of the device, which is designed to support some patients whose hearts cannot pump enough blood through the body on their own, is that it can allow patients to stay mobile while receiving heart support.

Nassima Ait-Daoud Tiouririne, MD, has been named chair of UVA's Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences.

A nationally recognized physician-scientist and academic leader, Dr. Ait-Daoud Tiouririne has held several leadership roles across UVA Health and has played an important role in advancing patient care, education, and faculty development.

Melinda joined UVA Health in 2023 as a Travel Nurse—and found something special.

"I came to UVA in December of 2023 on a Travel Nurse contract. I enjoyed the atmosphere. I enjoyed the busyness of the operating room. I enjoyed working with surgeons, nurses and scrub techs. There was a lot of really great teamwork amongst everyone and I found myself not really wanting to leave."
